Between 13 and 17 April, members of the Democratic Innovations Team conducted fieldwork in Brussels as part of Work Package 2 of the i4i project. Dr Marta Hoffmann, supported by Olga Kaziród (a Master's student of French philology at the Jagiellonian University who was recruited to support the research by providing French translations), conducted a series of semi-structured research interviews with key actors involved in the two cases we are studying: the Brussels Deliberative Commission on biodiversity and the Permanent Citizens’ Assembly (cycle: Housing). As part of the research, the researchers spoke with politicians, civil servants and experts about the impact of these assemblies on policies, decisions and actions taken by public authorities, as well as institutional structures. The research material collected has provided a better understanding of the Belgian context of public policy and will serve as a valuable reference point for the study of further cases examined within our Work Package 2. During this stay in Brussels, they were able to visit, amongst others, the regional parliament and units of municipal administration such as Perspective Brussels and Brussels Environment.
