Academic Etiquette

When writing your application, e-mail or any other information directed to the authorities of the university, teachers and other members of the staff remember about a relevant etiquette.

How to address a lecturer? Use his/her scientific degree or title.

For example:

- "Doctor", "Professor", or “Mr./Madam” to MA holders.

Until you get used to it, it can sometimes be confusing, but it is always better "upgrade" than "downgrade" :).

In the Dean’s Office, Secretariat and other offices in the Faculty

- "Good Morning or Goof Afternoon” will suffice.

How to write an email to your lecturer?

Try to avoid "Hello" - it is clearly inappropriate!

Rather use "Sir/Madam or (scientific degree or title) followed by the name". You may also start with the traditional "Good Morning".

Specify the topic of your email and stick to it in the further part of your email. Do not thank in advance - very inappropriate! Always sign your letter and give your “coordinates” (year, course of study, subject).

"Everyone has his/her proven methods. Some prefer to study at nights with their feet in a bowl of cold water to prevent them from falling asleep while reading books. Others learn just anywhere with headphones plugged and loud rap music on. However, let me mention some important rules that have been used for centuries. Learn when you are fresh"

"We are bombarded by so many issues every day. Are they all really that important..."?

"Regarding the dress code, well-mannered people follow two principles: Do not cause others to feel embarrassed and dress up appropriately to the situation."

"The good grades are the reason to be satisfied, but not necessarily to be euphoric."

"In moments of doubt, you must realize and remember that your progress and success depends solely on you. Search for mobilization rather than consolation in others"

"Interesting exhibition, another book or a volume of poetry are attributes of cultured people. They work like aesthetic and emotional vitamins that broaden their horizons. Universities are usually situated in cities that are proud of their cultural institutions. Do not be indifferent, go there and experience"

"You are mostly expected to display your attitude towards life, remain resistant to banality, open to rational thinking and continued effort to further your education."
